The well bred Yorkshire Terrier dogs should never be frail in their bodies nor timid or nervous in their temperament. Yorkies as they are commonly referred to, are one of the smallest and lightest breeds of dogs averaging about 5-8 pounds. Although they may be small enough to put in a purse they are to be brave, outgoing, energetic and have a feisty personality since they were originally bred to be hunters. Yorkies do make great travel companions, excellent watch dogs and some can even be great lap dogs.
Finding a qualified breeder can be as easy as searching online, in your phonebook, calling pet stores and word of mouth to name just a few resources available. Yorkshire Terrier breeders have quite the stringent list of qualities that must be adhered to to be considered AKC Yorkshire Terrier breeders. Starting with the dog’s general appearance, they must be long-haired with a blue and tan coat which is parted on the face and from the skull to the end of the tail. The hair must hang evenly and straight down both sides of the body. The bodies must be compact, neat and well proportioned. The dog’s head must be held high with great confidence and must give the appearance of both self-importance and vigor.
The Yorkie’s texture, quantity and quality of its coat are of upmost importance. Hair must be glossy, silky and fine in texture. The length must be moderately long and perfectly straight and not wavy. It can be trimmed to the floor length for ease of movement and a much neater appearance if so desired. The fall on the head is long and tied with just one bow in the center of the dog’s head. The hair needs to be trimmed short on the tips of the ears and can be trimmed on the paws as well for a neat appearance.
Yorkie breeders of dog shows in the United States are truly the best resource for purchasing a pet Yorkie puppy since show breeders dedicate enormous amounts of time and energy researching for those perfect Yorkies; ones that look great, are healthy and will live long happy lives. These will of course not be the cheapest Yorkies you will find but will certainly be the best your money can buy. Not all of the dogs will make the cut to become a Yorkie show dog but even the ones who don’t will still prove to be wonderful pets.
The AKC (American Kennel Club) definitely strongly encourages people to purchase a new little Yorkie from a responsible breeder. Although the AKC does not recommend nor endorse specific breeders they do provide a very valuable guide called the Breeder Referral Search as well as an Online Breeder Classified service. With just a little internet browsing you will find a lot of great information in steering you to the best breeder. Definitely be sure you receive your AKC registration papers from the breeder you choose when you purchase your brand new fluffy bundle of love (your new Yorkie!)
